Smart Farming Glossary

A comprehensive dictionary of precision agriculture, IoT, and edge computing terminology designed for the modern Indian farmer.

Evapotranspiration

The sum of evaporation from the land surface plus transpiration from plants. It is a crucial metric in precision agriculture used to determine exactly how much water a crop has lost and needs to be replenished.

LoRaWAN

Long Range Wide Area Network. A low-power, wide-area networking protocol designed to wirelessly connect battery operated 'things' to the internet in regional, national or global networks.

Volumetric Water Content (VWC)

A numerical measure of soil moisture. It is the ratio of the volume of water to the unit volume of soil. It is expressed as a percentage.

Edge AI

The deployment of Artificial Intelligence applications in devices throughout the physical world ('the edge') rather than in a central cloud computing facility or private data center.

Precision Agriculture

A farming management concept based on observing, measuring and responding to inter and intra-field variability in crops using technology.

NPK Ratio

The ratio of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K) in soil or fertilizer. These are the three macronutrients essential for plant survival and growth.

Capacitive Soil Sensor

A type of sensor that measures the dielectric permittivity of a surrounding medium. In soil, this permittivity is highly dependent on water content.

Microclimate

The climate of a very small or restricted area, especially when this differs from the climate of the surrounding area.
